In addition to the race itself, a number of traditions have played a large role in the Derby atmosphere. The Mint Julep, an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint and sugar, is the traditional beverage of the race. Burgoo, typically a thick stew of lamb and vegetables is served from iron pots sometimes 10 feet in diameter.
Legal gambling on the race is done through pari-mutuel betting at the track. The Infield, a spectator area inside the track, offers low general admission prices but little chance of seeing much of the race. Instead, revelers show up in the infield to party. By contrast, "Millionaire's Row" refers to the expensive box seats that attract the rich and famous. Elegant women appear in long dresses, big hats, and carrying fancy umbrellas. As the horses are paraded before the grandstands, "My Old Kentucky Home" is played by the University of Louisville marching band while the crowd stands and sings along.

Kentucky Derby Winners & Results

2010 Kentucky Derby 136th Winner:
Super Saver and Calvin Borel take Kentucky Derby 136. Super Saver, with Calvin Borel up, took the lead in the stretch while coming up along the rail to win the 136th running of the 2010 Kentucky Derby by 2 ½ lengths. WinStar Farm’s homebred son of Maria’s Mon gave trainer Todd Pletcher his first Derby win.

Borel's victory makes him the first jockey to win the Derby three times in a four-year span. The Churchill Downs-based rider was aboard Street Sense in 2007 and Mine That Bird last year.

2009 Kentucky Derby 135th Winner:
Mine That Bird is the long-shot winner of the 135th Kentucky Derby held Saturday, May 2nd at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Derby featured a full lineup of 19 three-year-olds, after favorite I Want Revenge was scratched the morning of the kentucky derby race, due to a weak left hoof, in the run for the roses and $2 million first prize.

Mine That Bird squirted through a hole in the rail and skipped from the muddy track into the lane all alone, the 153,563 at Churchill Downs checked their programs to see who the heck the No. 8 horse was. By that time, Borel and this horse he hardly knew were on their way to the winner’s circle for the blanket of roses.

2008 Kentucky Derby 134 Winner: Big Brown, overcoming the far outside post, rolled to a five-length victory Saturday in the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The three-year-old, unbeaten in four career starts, can now become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

Big Brown, the 2-1 favorite in the 20 horse field, becomes the first winner of the Run for the Roses to start from the 20-post since the starting gate has been used. It also is the third Kentucky Derby win for jockey Kent Desormeaux who previously captured the race in 1998 with Real Quiet and with Fusaichi Pegasus two years later.

Big Brown was coming into the Run for the Roses off a wire-to-wire victory in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. The Kentucky Derby triumph was worth $1.4 million to bring Big Brown's lifetime earnings to more than $2 million.

The colt is expected to start in the Preakness Stakes on May 17 at Pimlico, where he should be a prohibitive favorite. The third leg in racing's Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes which will be conducted on June 7 at Belmont Park.

Big Brown returned $6.80, $5.00 and $4.80. Eight Belles paid $10.60 and 6.40, and Denis of Cork paid $11.60 to show.

Affirmed is the last three-year-old to sweep the Triple Crown races when he and Alydar put on their monumental duels 30 years ago.

2007 Kentucky Derby 133 Winner Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense

An experienced trainer, an inspired rider and the raw talent of a powerful thoroughbred proved an unstoppable combination Saturday, as 9-2 favorite Street Sense rallied from far back to post a 2¼-length length victory over Hard Spun in the 133rd Kentucky Derby.

The $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1), the first leg of the Triple Crown and the ultimate target for every horse owner, was contested at Churchill Downs on Saturday before a crowd of 156,635.

Sunny skies were a welcome change from the wet conditions on Friday. A maximum field size of 20 went to post, with Street Sense sent off as the 9-5 favorite attempting to become the first Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner to come back to win the Derby. Undefeated Curlin, off his win in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn, was the 5-1 second choice over Florida Derby winner Scat Daddy at 7-1. Hard Spun, winner of the Lane's End Stakes, was the 10-1 fourth choice over Wood Memorial winner Nobiz Like Shobiz at 10.40-1 odds.
