There are several concepts unique to the Preakness Stakes race that have to be taken into account when handicapping the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown and particularly since the field won’t be set until the week before the race.

Once the Preakness Stakes field is announced it’s important to evaluate all of the entries not only as you would any other race but with the following concepts in mind:

DISTANCE:

The Preakness Stakes is run over a distance of a mile and 3/16, meaning that it’s actually a little bit shorter than the Kentucky Derby which precedes it by two weeks. That means that there’s not much of a question about Preakness entrants’ ability to handle this distance.

SCHEDULE:

One of the most significant reasons that winning the Triple Crown is such a rare event is the grueling schedule of the three races. While the ideal layoff between races varies from horse to horse, most high level equine competitors race fewer than 10 times per year. In most cases, thoroughbreds seldom race without a break of three weeks to a month.

WEATHER/TRACK CONDITION:

Horses are very sensitive to the conditions in which they run and the surfaces they run on. On balance, most owners and trainers try to avoid racing a promising young horse in inclement weather or on a sloppy track. If the weather at a racetrack becomes particularly bad you’ll see a number of ‘late scratches’ for this reason.

POST POSITION:

Only one horse “Rachel Alexandra” in 2009, has won the Preakness from the outside post position. In theory, the horses who draw the inside post positions have an advantage over the ones to the outside in any race. At Pimlico, however, there’s a historically demonstrated bias to horses that can run well on the rail. There’s been a number of theories for why racing near the rail is so valuable at Pimlico, from firmer dirt to an advantage in the tight turns. Whatever the reason, it’s something to pay attention to.

Bet Preakness Stakes Daily Double

Preakness Stakes Daily double betting requires you to pick the winners of two consecutive races on one ticket. All tracks offer the early daily double which involves races #1 and #2. Daily double is also offered by some tracks on the final two races of the day. Preakness Stakes Daily Doubles are an especially good bet when you have an excellent value horse (i.e. longshot) in either leg of the Daily Double.

A $2 Preakness Stakes daily double of 2-3 on the first two races would require that horse 2 win the first race and horse 3 win the second race in order for you to cash a ticket.

Some tracks even offer rolling doubles, which means you can bet the daily double on any two consecutive races throughout the card and On rare occasions, daily double wagering is also offered on selected races in the middle of a racing card. This is done in an effort to stimulate wagering on small fields that might otherwise offer little value to the bettor.

Betting the Preakness Stakes daily double is one of the best bargains in Triple Crown racing for a variety of reasons, but mainly because it has its own separate betting pool. This means that only one takeout (a percentage of each dollar wagered which is removed from the betting pools to pay the racetrack and various levels of government taxes), usually in the range of 17 percent, is applied to the betting pool before calculating the payoffs.

Exacta or Perfecta: You must tell the teller that you want to pay an Exacta or Perfecta. You then must chose the horse who will win an then chose the horse that will come in 2nd. They must come in the order you said. It would be most effective it box or reverse this play, in case your 1st choose is 2nd and your 2nd choice wins.

Twin Trifecta & Superfecta: To play Twin you must chose two races during the day and tell the teller that you want to play the Twin Trifecta or Twin Superfecta. If you win the first ticket, you must turn in that ticket and place the money on the second leg or race you chose. If you lose the second ticket most tracks will pay you on the amount of the first ticket.

As you grow more comfortable with handicapping, your betting will become more sophisticated. Two commonly used wagering tactics are boxes and wheels.

A Box is when you have two, three, or more horses that you predict will finish in the top positions but you are not necessarily sure of the order in which they will finish. Let’s try an Exacta Box involving two horses. Number 1 and Number 4. It’s essentially two Exacta wagers,1-4 and 4-1. You would say to the mutual clerk: “$2.00 Exacta box, 1 and 4.” That bet costs $4.00. No matter the order in which the 1 and 4 horses finish, you collect if they are the first two horses across the line.

The Trifecta Box works the same way with three or more horses. Let’s say that you figure the 6 horse will finish on the board with the 1 and 4. You would say: “$1.00 Trifecta box, 1,4, and 6.” With the $1 minimum wager on Trifectas, a three-horse Trifecta box costs $6.00.

A Wheel is used when you have high confidence in one horse and are unsure about the remainder of the field. For instance, in an Exacta Wheel, you can take the 2 horse and wheel it with the rest of the field. You would say “$2 Exacta wheel 2,all.” In a 12-horse fired, a $2 Exacta Wheel would cost $22 for 11 different Exacta combinations. Trifecta Wheels work similarly, and you also can do a Partial Wheel.

Exacta Part-Wheel If your handicapping indicates that either the 3 or 4 horse will win and the 5 or 6 horse will finish second, you would say to the betting attendant: “$2 Exacta Part-Wheel, 3,4 with 5,6.” (Cost: $8)

Trifecta Part-Wheel You handicap the 3 and 4 horses to finish first and second, and the 5 or 6 horses to finish third. You say: “$2 Trifecta Part-Wheel, 3, 4 with 3,4 with 5,6.” (Cost $8)

Daily Double Part-Wheel You like the 6 or 7 horse to win the first half of the Daily Double, and the 8,9 or 10 horse to win the second half. You would say: “$2 Daily Double Part Wheel, 6,7 with 8,9,10.” (Cost: $12)

Churchill Downs race track is recognizable in pictures for its iconic twin spires soaring high above the grandstands. 1-TWIRLING CANDY (4/5) – expected to be the heavy horse betting favorite, as his morning line odds would suggest, this colt could stamp himself as the top older runner in the country with another win today. He has won three of his last four starts, all stakes, and taken 7-of-9 races in his career. The only thing he hasn’t done is win at this horse betting distance.

2-MISS MATCH (20/1) – tough spot for this mare to take on the boys. She pulled a 45/1 shocker in the Santa Margarita-G1 back in March at Santa Anita, but even that race isn’t fast enough to win today. Ran lights-out against top fillies Blind Luck and Switch last time out, and this will be her second start off the bench. She does have a win at this horse betting distance on her resume.

3-SETSUKO (8/1) – runner-up in his last two starts, but the horses that beat him are back again today (Twirling Candy and Game On Dude). While it appears he’s in the best form of his career, this colt remains eligible for a “non-winners of one other than” allowance horse betting race – his only win came against maidens back in December 2009.

4-GAME ON DUDE (6/1) – one of two in here for trainer Bob Baffert. This gelding beat several of these in the Santa Anita Handicap-G1 back in early March and will be reunited with jockey Chantal Sutherland for the first time since. He’s lost his last two starts, most recently as the horse betting favorite in Texas when run down by Awesome Gem. His speed could be key.

5-AWESOME GEM (10/1) – this eight-year-old gelding is the top horse betting morning earner in the field, with a $2.5 million bankroll that is double his closest pursuer. Beaten favorite in the Cornhusker Handicap-G3 at Prairie Meadows last time out, but did knock off Game On Dude two horse betting starts back in Texas. This will be his sixth start in the last three months – over his sixth different racetrack. He won this race last year at 8/1 odds, and today’s rider David Flores was aboard.

6-SOUL CANDY (10/1) – deserves credit for his horse betting consistency but has finished behind Twirling Candy, Game On Dude and Setsuko in recent races. Winless since last October when he took a $150,000 stake for California-bred runners. Positive horse betting angle of improving Beyer Speed Figures but needs to take another step forward today.

7-FIRST DUDE (5/1) – the second “Dude” from Baffert. A former confirmed horse betting frontrunner, a change in style to off-the-pace tactics have resulted in consecutive wins. Most recently he won the Alysheba Stakes-G3 at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks Day, and that race has not “come back very strong.” Soundly beaten by Game On Dude and Setsuko in early March, yet that was before he decided to change horse betting tactics.

8-DARK COVE (12/1) – interesting horse betting shipper from the east. Just 11 months ago this colt was claimed for $16,000 at Saratoga. He has won four times since being haltered by Ken McPeek, but both tries against graded company were disasters. He is unbeaten over synthetic surfaces, albeit against much easier. McPeek has been on fire so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this colt run well, although the jury is out on whether he’s capable of beating a field like this.

Horse Betting Online Outlook TWIRLING CANDY was a horse betting handful for Joel Rosario in the Californian Stakes-G2 last time out, and still pulled away from SETSUKO with total ease. Based on talent alone he is one of the top runners in the U.S., but there are times when he can be his own worst enemy. Given that, plus him carrying high weight at a distance where he’s never won, makes it difficult to jump in with both fists at 4/5 or less. That being said, who is capable of beating him.

That’s the tough part, because most of these need a career-best effort and an off day by the horse betting favorite. FIRST DUDE and AWESOME GEM have run fast enough in the past and both will offer much “bettor” value. So will GAME ON DUDE, who ran the race of his life the last time Sutherland was in the saddle.

The Belmont Stakes is called the “Run for the Carnations” because of the blanket of white carnations that are draped over the winner’s neck. Because of its length (one lap around the enormous Belmont main track) and because it is the final race of the Triple Crown, it is called the “Test of the Champion”.
