Big Brown charged to the lead turning
for home and then cruised down the stretch to win the Preakness on
Saturday, still perfect and squarely pointed toward thoroughbred
racing's first Triple Crown in 30 years.
Just as he did two weeks ago in a Kentucky Derby marred by the
breakdown of Eight Belles, the colt named for UPS delivered another
stunning win, this time by 5 1/4 lengths.
Macho Again was second and Icabad Crane was third.
The Belmont Stakes will be run June 7. It's been three decades since
Affirmed swept that race along with the Derby and Preakness to give
racing its 11th Triple Crown winner.
Big Brown paid $2.40, $2.60 and $2.40. Macho Again returned $17.20 and
$10.40, while Icabad Crane paid $5.60 to Show. |

131st Preakness Stakes Results
Bernardini – Trainer Tom Albertrani's first success in a Triple Crown race was overshadowed by the tragic injury suffered by Derby winner Barbaro shortly after the start of Saturday's 131st running of the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) at Pimlico Race Course. Yet, the 48-year-old trainer couldn't help but feel proud of Bernardini, who captured the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 5 1/4 lengths under Javier Castellano.

A full field of 14
colts left the starting gate in the 1 3/16 mile race. Afleet Alex,
ridden by Jeremy Rose, started from post 12 and immediately headed to
the rail. Rose rode his mount through the first mile in an almost
perfect manner.
Afleet Alex raced up the
backstretch along the inside to save ground and began his move to lead
around the turn home. Coming out of the final turn Scrappy T had the
lead with Afleet Alex bearing down from the outside.
Just as Afleet Alex reached Scrappy T coming out of the turn, jockey
Ramon Dominguez hit his horse with the whip on the left side, This
caused the leader to bolt to the outside and into the path of Afleet
Alex, nearly putting Afleet Alex to his knees at the top of the
stretch. Somehow Jeremy Rose remained in the saddle and the colt
regained his stride to go on and win the Preakness Stakes.
Afleet registered a five length win over Scrappy T, who was also able
to remain running to finish second. Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo
finished third followed by Sun King, High Limit, Noble Causeway,
Greeley's Galaxy, Malibu Moonshine, Closing Argument, High Fly, Hal's
Image, Wilko, Galloping Grocer and Going Wild.
